Born in Philadelphia, José Luis Cortés is a painter, video and performance artist, and educator. His gauche newspaper series in the 1990s were personal records of Gay Latino life in New York City.

Cortés has exhibited at the Newyorican Poets Café, el Museo del Barrio, and el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and in galleries across the country. He has also been represented in exhibitions curated by Visual Aids and GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis).

Part of the citywide celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Reminder Day Demonstrations in Philadelphia. For more information on the celebration go to http://waygay.org/reminder2015. The collaborator for the exhibition, and of the accompanying panel discussion, Gay & Latino, is GALAEI.
